TomTom won't succeed in shipping the new GO 500 by the end of this month. Worse even: distributors, retailers and so also their customers will have to wait until the second half of this June for the new midrange GO. However, it's not all bad news: the expected shipping date of the GO 700 has been advanced with a few weeks.
Supply
Several retailers were notified this week that the shipment of the GO 500 has been delayed for a few weeks. According to TomTom the demand for the GO 500 is too large to be able to supply all the shops with enough units in one go. (no pun)
One of the causes of the shortage is the deal that TomTom made with car manufaturer Toyota. This deal was announced last month. The new Toyota AYGO, that will be introduced mid June will have the option of a Mobility pack. This pack will consist out of a TomTom GO 500 with a three year warrantly, updates, a front cover in the same colour as the car and an installation into the dashboard. Because of this agreement, the first few hundred GO's that are manufactured have been reserved for Toyota.
GO 700
People that want to buy a new GO before the upcoming holidays and for whom the already available GO 300 is insufficient might have to set their hopes on the GO 700 now. This unit is expected to be in the shops in the first weeks of this June.
However, this might not be such a bad thing, because we believe that the GO 700 (€799 / £550) is the better deal of the two. Remember that the GO 500 combined with the Maps of Western Europe (which are completely integrated in the GO 700) will cost you €798 / £548. This may seem about the same but don't forget that the GO 500 has no remote control and only half the internal memory of the GO 700.
