GO 510, 710 and 910 announced!

Wednesday March 1, 2006 - Only one big week before CeBIT and TomTom has already unveiled a few details about their upcoming hardware: there will be three new GO's!

We already expected that TomTom would release new models around CeBIT, just like they did last year. But the what and the how was still guesswork. Until today, because TomTom has just unveiled the first details for the 2006 GO lineup. It will consist out of three models: the TomTom GO 510, the TomTom GO 710 and the TomTom GO 910.

Widescreen
The first thing we notice about the photo's are the wide screens of the new GO's. The former GO generation still used 'regular' 4:3 screen resolution, but these new models all feature a 4 inch widescreen! We're not entirely sure yet, but at first glance it looks the screens have a 16:9 resolution. And that's a first when it comes to PND's!

Also hard to ignore is the fact that the 510, 710 and 910 all still feature the well-known round GO-shape. So the ONE is still the odd one out. No doubt the round shape of the GO is preserved because this is a necessity for the implementation of a high quality speaker. As you probably know, this speaker is needed to be able to produce the well-known powerful and warm GO-sound.

According to TomTom, all three new models feature greatly enhanced GPS reception. No doubt that these units also feature the quite new but already renowned SiRF Star III chipset. We've come to know and love this chipset because it's also used in the ONE and the RIDER. So we know all about the spectacular good and stable GPS reception we may expect from it.

HOME
But there's more news. Today TomTom also announced that the GO 510, 710 and 910 will ship with a so-called docking station in the box, which will enable you to charge your PND or connect it to your computer in an easy fashion. There will also be the new and free TomTom HOME software. This software will allow you to manage your GO.

The TomTom GO 510, 710 and 910 will all feature improved handsfree functionality and will ship with TomTom's newest safety camera database already installed.

A bit more about the different models:

TomTom GO 510
The new entry level model. And, while the complete specs aren't known just yet, we expect it to have a 380 Mhz CPU and 64 MB of RAM. The 510 is shipped with a docking station, can be used as a handsfree car kit by means of Bluetooth and will feature a regional map with the Major Roads of Europe integrated.

TomTom GO 710
The successor of the 700 doesn't use an internal harddisk anymore. Instead, it uses SD cards as it's data carrier. It ships with a seamless map of the entire continent of Europe. We believe this model will feature a 380 Mhz CPU and 64 MB of RAM, a docking station and possibly also a remote control.

TomTom GO 910
The new top of the range model is the TomTom GO 910. It's got absolutely astounding specs! We're betting on a 400+ Mhz CPU, 128 MB of RAM and a harddisk of more than 20 GB! Besides that, it's also the first portable navigation device on the market featuring multi-continental map coverage including the whole of Europe, the USA and Canada! Of course it also ships with the docking station and it also features handfree calling.

But that's not all! It also has a range of smart extras such as a fully integrated MP3 player for playing audiobooks, music and podcasts as well as text-to-speech functionality which will eg. be used to read street names out loud! How's that for innovation!

The new GO's will be available by April (UK: May). No prices have been announced yet, but we expect this information very soon. Of course, we also commit to bringing you an in-depth review of all these units as soon as possible!

TomTom PLUS
As we all know by now, TomTom PLUS is TomTom’s offering of content and services to enhance users’ navigation experience and make journeys as stress free, personal, safe and fun as possible. The PLUS service also undergoes an upgrade. We already know the Voices, Traffic, Weather and the Safety Cameras, but now TomTom has also added Audiobooks and Buddies. In addition, the TomTom Traffic service now also includes information about Road Conditions.

TomTom RDS/TMC Traffic Receiver
Many have asked for it, and TomTom has listened to their customers: for this reason they've added a TomTom RDS/TMC Traffic Receiver to the list of available accessories, to enable users to receive free ongoing traffic information via radio signals. The RDS/TMC Traffic Receiver connects easily to the TomTom GO device and will automatically start receiving traffic information via the TMC connection. There's one caveat though: this accessory will ONLY function with the newest generation of GO's!

Further details about the 510, 710 and 910, TomTom HOME and probably also a new version of GO firmware (6.0?) will be made public at the CeBIT fair in Hannover Germany, which starts on March 9th 2006 and lasts an entire week.

We'll keep you informed...
