Downloadable new GO maps for sale!

Tuesday November 29, 2005 - Today, TomTom has started to offer the new region maps for your TomTom GO. You can buy the maps through TomTom PLUS.

Starting today, the most recent region maps for your TomTom GO are available for purchase! These are composed from the most recent TeleAtlas data (2005.2), that has been made available since August 2005. These GO maps carry version number 605.

Download
Completely new is the fact that you now can also purchase the maps by downloading them from the TomTom site. This has been an option for a while now with the city-maps, but this is the first time that entire region maps are available for download. For this, check out the TomTom PLUS pages. An summary of the prices per region are posted on the bottom of this newspost.

Update: the former newspost contained an error. Contrary to what was posted earlier, it is not necessary to own the current map if you want to buy an new downloadable map. However, there is something else to consider: TomTom thinks of these maps as 'accessories', NOT upgrades. These maps are meant to replace the add-on maps that were available on separate SD cards.
The good news is that there will also be a new 'map upgrade program', just like last time. The upgrade will also this time be at a reduced price for upgrading customers. The details of the upcoming upgrade action are not yet released. So, to make things clear: you CAN opt to buy the current downloadable maps, but in the very short future, there will also be a new upgrade action which will offer the same maps at a reduced price.

Another piece of information concerns all the 700 users. TomTom states that the currently downloadable maps are not meant for use with the 700, since they are not seamless. TomTom 700 users should await the upcoming upgrade action if they want the new maps.

Belgium
These new maps will also squash the 'Belgium-problem' bug that has been plaguing GO users for a while now. In order to fix this, TomTom also released a new firmware upgrade last week. Unfortunately, this only partly solved the problem. These new maps are now organised in such a way that the problems on map-level will also be a thing of the past.
