Another (small) upgrade available

Thursday July 14, 2005 - TomTom has just released another small firmware update for your TomTom GO. But this time it's only a minor upgrade with only a few changes.

Only three weeks since the 5.2 firmware upgrade, a new version is being released. The software works on every available TomTom GO, and you can download it from the TomTom site.

This new release (version v5.201 build 5252) has only minor changes compared to version 5.2 though. The most important reason for this new build are some changes for technical checks in the code. This was necessary because the new shipments of the TomTom GO 300, GO 500 and GO 700 use chips from a different manufacturer than the one that was used before.

One bug that did get squashed has to do with the phoning to POI's. TomTom had found out that somtimes when a call was made to a POI, and extra digit was added to the phone number, rendering it useless. This problem is now fixed.

Backup
Still, it is advisable to download and install the new version, because of one improved important feature: the backup option. With this new windows installer, more backup options are created. Eg. it's now possible to backup only the settings, or the entire SD card or harddisk !

Since TomTom doesn't ship an installation CD with their new units anymore, this is a very important new feature! Remember: if you're a TomTom GO 300, 500 or 700 user, PLEASE backup your unit first, even before ever using it! Don't consider it, just do it! Chances are you'll thank us later for this advice.
