Retail SD maps 2005 now available
Friday June 10, 2005 - TomTom started selling the regular retail (non-upgrade) SD card maps per region on their site. Prices are lower than they were for the 2004 maps.
Selling at €99,- / £66,- the new SD card maps are a lot cheaper than the previous version. Those costed €149,- / £100,-.
All the SD cards are ready for use and have the GO-application on board (version 5.0), the voice files, all GO funtions and of course the map of the specific area. For The Netherlands and the UK, the full postcodes are also included.
Update
The new price does raise a question however. If you buy eg. a Benelux upgrade now, it'll cost you (including shipping) €88,95 / £60. That's only about €10 / £7 less than if you would buy the complete retail version. We also wouldn't be surprised that a lot of shops will be selling these new cards for a lower price that the recommended retail price of €99,- / £66,- which could result in the strange phenomenon that the new retail card could actually turn out cheaper than the upgrade version!
Seven regions
There are new maps available for seven regions, and the prices differ from region to region. Here's all of them in a small list, complete with the coverage percentage added for your convenience.
Map of The Netherlands (99%), Belgium (99%) and Luxembourg (99%). The Major Roads of Europe are integrated onto the 256 MB SD card.
Map of Finland (99%), Denmark (99%), South of Sweden (99%) and the South of Norway (99%). The Major Roads of Europe are integrated onto the 512 MB SD card.
Map of France (99%). The Major Roads of Europe are integrated onto the 512 MB SD card.
Map of Germany (99%), Austria (99%), Switserland (99%), Poland (18%) and the Czech Republic (36%). The Major roads of Europe are integrated onto the 512 MB SD card.
Map of the UK (99%). The Major roads of Europe are integrated onto the 256 MB SD card.
Map of Spain (86%), Andorra (99%) and Portugal (43%). The Major roads of Europe are integrated onto the 256 MB SD card.
Map of Italy (97%). The Major roads of Europe are integrated onto the 512 MB SD card.
By the end of this June the 2005 version of the Maps of Western Europe will also be available as a retail package.
