TTG upside down in a Cruiser - the gold wedge shaped piece is made from Fimo
clay, hardened in an oven, it levels out the slope! TTG mount has been 'adapted'
with some bits (can't remember which) turned the other way up. The suction
cup has been cut off, two holes drilled with screws & nuts to secure the
remainder of the base together. All bits are attached using extra strong
velcro for easy removal, at a later date. The rubber band keeps the antenna
and power leads secure at the base.

Citroen - C5 Exclusive (build: June 2002) Photo of placement:
Description/comments:
Had signal problems at first due to the windscreen. However, invested in an external antenna and had another problem - where to put it! Fortunately the C5 has a fixed part of the mirror trim on the front wing. This is hollow and you slide the antenna in just above where the door hinge is set. The wires can go over (or under) the door seal and be tucked inside the pop-out in the side of the dash giving access to the top of the drivers glove box. Using the window sucker TTG then sits nicely in the corner.

The Tom Tom Go (Classic) is fixed to the drivers front quarterlight, and the external antenna is simply laid on the rear parcel shelf. I tracked the cable down the drivers door seal and along the bottom of both o/s door seals then up into the boot. All the excess cable was then left behind the Citroen trolley in the boot and just a single wire & the square pad antenna is on top of the parcel shelf. I am going to stick it to a 2" x 4" metal plate as its a 'mag mount' which will keep it the right way up. Reception is excellent! :-))

No signal through the winscreen. Bought the external ariel and had intended to fit it outside but found a clear spot behind the rear view mirror against the rain/light sensor. Lifted the ceiling trim and fed the ariel cable along the top of the windscreen and then down the drivers side A frame pillar. Unit is mounted on the bracket tucked in the corner of the screen with the cables hidden by my parking disk! Would imagine straight mounting beside the mirror would have the same effect but had bought the external ariel before I found the clear spot! Used to get 3/4/5 satellites before installation by mounting on the drivers window now get 8/9 pretty much constantly.

Most cars recently built by French manufacturers, Citroen, Renault etc. have Athermic Windscreens. They will all have a clear patch (or 2) near the internal rear view mirror in order to display the Tele-Peage card so it can be read as you drive through the Autoroute toll barriers. I have fitted my aerial in that space but am still waiting for the Tom-Tom to arrive so I can use it.

Used the self adhesive pad with movable platform from the alternative mounting kit and stuck it on the small window by the mirror of the driver’s door. I do not think that this is heat reflective like the windscreen. Make sure you position it well so the unit does not squashed when closing the door! Very good reception most of the time. I do have a arial on order for those black spots!!! Very easy to reach the unit for control and you do not need to take your eyes off the road when viewing the TT Go 500

Purely by accident I have discovered that mounting the GO as low as possible in the middle of the windscreen it has improved the reception tremendously. Ford - Transit Van (build: September 1998) Photo of placement:
Description/comments:
I intially mounted my TomTomGO using the suction mount attatched to the screen, however in the Transit as most of you will know you sit quite back from the screen which meant having to lean forward to program the TomTom which is not too good if on the move!

In the TomTomGO box I found a round plastic disk which I quickly figured was for fixing to the dash & then attatching the suction mount to this as you would with the screen fixing. The result is much better. I can now reach my TomTom with ease & it's visibly clearer as it's now much closer. The mount is a little restrictive but still does the job of securing the TomTomGO unit satisfactorily.
This disk is not covered in the instructions so you might miss it. The TomTom GO can still be removed & transfered to another vehicle just the same as if attatching it to your windscreen. The only disadvantage I can see is how difficult it might be to remove the disk mount later on as it sticks like hell!

I feel the TomTom GO looks better mounted this way. It looks professionally installed & not something just stuck onto your windshield & that appears as if it could drop off at anytime. Looking at some of the photos submitted I'm amazed some of these get reception especially the ones mounted up high near the sun visors or rear view mirror. That position is certainly not for me, I can't see how these mounting positions can be considered safe & must be very distracting! I barely have to take my eyes off the road to view my screen with ease!

Description/comments:
My RangeRover has a heated front windscreen. If you look carefully you can see that the heating elements don't go to the extreme left/right edges of the screen. On a frosty morning heat the screen to see the bits that the elements miss or looking carefully at the screen will reveal two unheated areas on both the L and R sides. I don't use the arm and suction cup as this advertises the GO to thieves and is also cumbersome. Instead, I use industrial velco and place the GO in the RH corner of the screen about 1cm away from the pillar and screen. 5 bar reception, easy to reach and when removed there is no evidence (apart from strip of black velcro) that it was there.

Opel/Vauxhall - Astra Coupe Turbo (build: March 2001) Photo of placement:
Description/comments:
The problem with the Coupe is that the windscreen is very sloped, so to reach the TomTom was a stretch. No matter what I tried I could not get the suction cup to stick to the windscreen either.
Also the car has a heat reflective metal sheet through the glass so I had to mount an aerial (small 2" square thing) in the hatched section above the rear view mirror.

The solution to the position; remove the sucker part of the mount by undoing the finger nuts. Pull out the left centre air vent, the shape of the remaining part of the TomTom mount slots nicely through the lats of the removed vent. Insert a cable tie through the finger bolt holes from the back of the vent and push the vent back into place, it will still blow air through.

If you look at the photo you can probably see the aerial wire going from the mount and behind the glove box and round the windscreen to the aerial above the mirror. The glovebox comes out easily with 6 hex screws.

The TomTom is much easier to reach, is very sturdy and is out of the sunlight. My only problem now is that my polarised sunglasses seem to block out LCD screens!

I tried mounting my TTG in a few places before I settled on a favourite. The first one was the lower central part of the windscreen but found that sometimes it obscured my view. My preferred location is the bottom right hand side corner of the windscreen just above the air vent. It's near enough so you can use the touch screen easily and far enough away that it doesn't obstruct your hands when steering. Also it doesn't obscure your view :)

My TTGO is located bottom right front windscreen and attached to the car charger as it would reach from the lighter. I installed an external arial and ran the receiver cabling along the floor concealed in the rubber door trim and fixed the receiver in the rear side window. I had originally bundled the cabling and just popped the receiver on to the roof when needed, but I noticed that small scratches were appearing on the roof so decided to relocate inside the car permanently.

Started in the middle but found that obscured visibility. Tucked away in the bottom right hand corner is the most effective and out of the way area. Usually 4 to five bars no problem.

I use it in the bottom corner of the windscreen, but it works anywhere on the dash. Windscreen is "heat absorbing" as described by Saab.

I've also heard it working when I've forgotten to turn it off and it's in the glovebox or boot!!

There are no real problems placing the TTG anywhere, but for convenience, the lower right-hand corner works well, and signal reception is fine.

Volkswagen - Passat (build: November 2002) Photo of placement:
Description/comments:
On the right hand side of the steering wheel, low down on the windscreen, so that the GO is not touching but sandwiched between the pillar and the dash.

This has three advantages.

1) No glare, as the GO is not directly in line with any window.
2) I get to hide the power lead in the door seal.
3) I can easily reach it while driving.

Whatever your reception level, when driving in big cities with high buildings (shadows) or trees, I found that only way is the external antenna - works perfect on top of rear roof !
now having average of 8 to 10 satellites in view !

Flip the screen in the options menu & hang upside down from glass right under rear view mirror. Entire suction clamp kit is virtually hidden behind mirror and from the outside is much less noticable than low on the screen..... minimises the 'advert' to the passing outlaw that there may be a TTG in the glove box.
